In the 1920s Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst purchased the Dartington Hall estate, near Totnes in South Devon. They set it up a cultural as well as agricultural centre and started to create an archive of film. As part of that work they sent cameramen to record ordinary work around the country, including the digging of peat for fuel in central Somerset. This evening includes many different pieces of film, some with sound and some with a music soundtrack and including footage of the Dartington estate and other memorable moments of the early 20th century.
Jim Whittle is the Director of the Barn Cinema at Dartington and he will introduce this programme of special films.
