Shapwick Heath NNR:
Winter feels like it has finally arrived in Somerset after a very warm and stormy autumn. The rains
have been a welcome relief for the land after the drought this summer, with ditches refilling as
the leaves fell. As I’m writing this the cold snap is in full swing, with lovely sunny mornings full of
frosty views across the reserves.
The Shapwick volunteers have been out clearing scrub from the droves across the reserve and
clearing fence lines over the last couple of months. Our new tracked chipper has been getting
some action clearing up all the arisings! The Gordano volunteers have also been hard at work
dismantling an old pheasant release pen from the woodland. RoAM have been out carrying out
a wide variety of surveys across the marshes and Mendip; read on to hear what they found!
