Pond dipping day

Come and discover the underwater world at Shapwick Moor! From water beetles to dragonfly nymphs, the waterways here are teeming with amazing aquatic life.

Shapwick Moor Nature Reserve has many ponds and other waterways like ditches and scrapes. These habitats are home to lots of aquatic critters such as fish, invertebrates (like dragonfly nymphs and snails) and newts. It is important we sample these communities to monitor the health of the ponds.

Our expert volunteer will be showing us how to take a water sample with a net and then helping us to identify all the animals we find in each sample. All equipment will be provided.

This event is open for all to attend, including families, although it is most suited to children aged 7 years and over. Parental discretion is advised and under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

ACCESSIBILTY

This event will involve walking off the main paths into the fields over uneven grass and sometimes muddy ground. We will be dipping in ponds and scrapes in the fields, spending quite a bit of time kneeling down and analysing the water samples.

WHAT TO BRING

Make sure you dress for the weather, bringing warm clothes and waterproofs as needed. We will be walking across muddy fields so welly boots are recommended.
