Join archaeologist and heritage interpreter Caroline Nicolay for a unique workshop dedicated to painting the newly-reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse at Avalon Archaeology.
Create paint from natural pigments and ancient methods, then use your hand-made brushes to apply it to the walls of the roundhouse. This immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to contribute directly to the decoration of an authentic Iron Age structure.
This unique event is limited to just 10 participants, ensuring a personalized and immersive experience.
Schedule
Morning: The day will start with pigment-making. This is a technique where pure colours are extracted from various minerals, such as local earth, sand, clay, all foraged by the tutor. These natural pigments can be used for paints, pastels, crayons… even cosmetics! (Pigments samples can be taken home to finish or use after the course.)
While the pigments settle and the kettle boils: Make your own natural paintbrushes. Following historical descriptions, and a demonstration, each participant will create a selection of feather, animal hair or vegetal fibres brushes to take home.
The rest of the day: Decorate the walls of the new replica Iron Age house on site. Explore historical binders (adhesives mixed with pigments to make paint), such as egg tempera, tree gum, milk casein, and start painting!
