Viking Invasion (Festival of Archaeology)

23/07/2023, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Avalon Archaeology at the Avalon Marshes Centre
Viking Invasion (Festival of Archaeology)
Explore life in the Viking world.
Costumed re-enactors Draca Beorðor will bring Avalon Archaeology to life, demonstrating everything from natural dying, willow weaving and carpentry, to cooking, hunting, arms and armour, and ink making.
You can also strike a Viking coin, follow the Art Trail, learn to write in runes and dress up like a Viking for a selfie in the longhall.
During your visit, you can explore an Iron-Age roundhouse under construction, a richly decorated Roman dining room, an Anglo-Saxon longhall, and a waterline replica of a Viking ship. Filled with handcrafted furniture and art, you will immerse yourself in thousands of years of heritage and discover the detective work behind its recreation.
Entry tickets to Avalon Archaeology can be purchased on the day at the welcome hut. These tickets also give free re-entry to the site throughout 2023. Please note we only accept payments by card.

ACCESSIBILITY

The reconstructed buildings are accessible but feature some uneven gravel surfaces and narrow spaces that may make turning in larger electric wheelchairs difficult. A manual wheelchair is available on site for visitors to loan if there are issues. Generally, light levels may be lower than you may be used to in modern buildings, and visitors are welcome to use a torch. Large print guides are available from the Welcome Hut. Please contact us at avalon@swheritage.org.uk if you want to discuss special requirements.
