Join herbalists David Cypher and Julia Bedford for an immersive, hands-on workshop at Avalon Archaeology that will explore the rich traditions of herbal medicine – from Anglo Saxon England to 13th century Wales, with insights from 11th century Germany along the way.
Discover the traditional uses, folk tales and modern relevance of a variety of plants on a guided forage, sample a herbal charm, and try your hand at making your own potions and lotions.
You’ll also help prepare a communal lunch to be enjoyed together.
What you’ll be learning:
- The world of medicine during the Medieval period and a brief introduction to the ‘four humours’.
- The Nine Herbs Charm – part of a 10th century Anglo Saxon medical compilation called ‘Lacnunga’. You will hear the charm in its Old English and discover each plant.
- Discover Hildegard of Bingen – a visionary German Benedictine Abbess, polymath, healer and expert herbalist. You’ll hear more about her healing theory and can have a go at making some of Hildegard’s medicine.
- The Welsh Medicine System that includes the Physicians of Myddfai and the folklore that surrounds them. You will learn more about them and prepare some of their herbal medicines.
